✅ Healthy margin
Understanding Product Margins
- <15%: Low margin — consider raising prices or reducing costs
- 15–30%: Moderate margin — healthy for most physical products
- >30%: High margin — excellent profitability
- Formula: Margin % = (Retail − Total Cost) ÷ Retail × 100
- Total Cost includes manufacturing + shipping (excludes platform fees)
Aim for at least a 30% margin on physical products to account for overhead, marketing, and unexpected costs. Use the Target Retail Price field to experiment with different price points.
⏱️ Freelance Hourly Rate Calculator
Freelance Hourly Rate Calculator
Turn your desired salary into a realistic hourly billing rate
Required Hourly Rate
$65.97
$95,000 ÷ 1440 billable hours
How to Use This Rate
- This is your minimum viable rate — the floor, not the ceiling
- Add 15–30% to cover taxes, healthcare, and retirement (since freelancers pay self-employment tax)
- Consider raising your rate for specialized skills, urgent timelines, or premium clients
- Many freelancers find that only 50–70% of their work hours are actually billable
- Formula: Rate = (Salary + Expenses) ÷ ((52 − Vacation) × Hours/Week)
Most freelancers should charge 1.5–2× their calculated rate to account for taxes, benefits, and unbillable time. Use this as your starting point, then adjust up based on your experience and market demand.

Invoice Client
$1,030.17
Amount to send in invoice
Fee Loss
$30.17
Total fees paid by client
Exactly what you wanted — the client covers all fees
How the Calculation Works
The reverse fee formula ensures your client pays the processing fees, not you:
Invoice Amount = Target ÷ (1 − Fee%) + Fixed Fee
= $1,000.00 ÷ (1 − 2.9%) + $0.30
= $1,030.17
- Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction (US standard)
- PayPal International charges 4.4% + $0.30 per transaction (cross-border rate)
- Always add a note on your invoice: "Processing fees included"
Many freelancers absorb fees as a cost of doing business, but it's perfectly acceptable to pass them through. Just be transparent with your client about the markup.

About Destination Tiers
Cost estimates include rent, food, transport, utilities, and basic healthcare:
- Budget Hub ($1,500/mo): Chiang Mai, Bali, Medellín, Ho Chi Minh City — ideal for entry-level nomads and frugal travelers
- Mid Tier Hub ($2,500/mo): Lisbon, Bangkok, Mexico City, Buenos Aires — comfortable lifestyle with good infrastructure
- Premium Hub ($4,000/mo): London, Tokyo, NYC, Sydney — high cost of living, premium amenities
Note: Actual costs vary by neighborhood, lifestyle, and currency fluctuations. These are monthly estimates for a single person.
A good rule of thumb: your income should be at least 1.3× the cost of living to comfortably save, travel, and handle unexpected expenses.

How Estimated Quarterly Taxes Work
The US IRS requires freelancers and self-employed individuals to pay estimated taxes quarterly:
- Q1 (Apr 15): Jan–Mar earnings
- Q2 (Jun 15): Apr–May earnings
- Q3 (Sep 15): Jun–Aug earnings
- Q4 (Jan 15): Sep–Dec earnings
This is an estimate. Actual liability depends on your total annual income, filing status, state taxes, and available credits. Consult a CPA for your specific situation.
Set up an automatic transfer to a separate high-yield savings account on each payday. This keeps your tax money separate and earns interest until quarterly payments are due.

How Compounding Works
This uses the future value of an annuity formula, compounded monthly:
FV = P × ((1 + r/12)^(12×t) − 1) / (r/12)
Where:
P = Monthly investment · r = Annual return · t = Years
- Monthly compounding — returns are reinvested and earn returns themselves each month
- The earlier you start, the more powerful the effect — time is the most important variable
- Past performance ≠ future results — market returns vary year to year
Investing your side-hustle profits rather than spending them is how freelancers build long-term wealth. Even $200/month at 8% for 30 years grows to over $298,000 — with only $72,000 contributed.
